 St
Mary's Church, Bures
The
Village
Bures is a rural
village of about 1,600 inhabitants, situated in
the east of England between the small market town
of Sudbury and the larger town of Colchester.
The people of the
village come from all sorts of backgrounds, but
generally the community is a fairly prosperous
one, with some farming families, and many
professional earners of whom quite a number
commute to London.
Our
church
St Mary's Bures is
one of three churches which make up our benefice
and occupies an old 14th century building in the
centre of the village. It has been well
maintained, and there have been alterations to
the tower to make rooms for Young Church groups,
meetings, crèche, etc.
We have two Sunday
services, 8 a.m. using the Book of Common Prayer
and the main one at 10.30 a.m. The music is
provided either by an organ with choir or by a
music group - or usually both.
The exception is
the second Sunday of the month when we have three
services, 8 a.m., 10.30 a.m. and an informal
service known as 'Second Sunday' which starts
with coffee and pastries at 10 for 10.30
a.m. and is held in the school hall. If you
are not familiar with church, this service is the
one for you.
Once a term we
have an evening of informal worship 'Come
Together'. Throughout the week there
are also morning meetings, mother and baby days
and many other events.
For more
information go to our services and
meetings page. Here you will
also find the times of services in the churches
in our other two parishes of Assington and Little
Cornard.
There are eight
home groups which meet to study the Bible and to
support one another in our Christian faith.
To find out which group might suit you, please
contact me, Robin King (see bottom of page).
Our
Hopes for the Future
Whilst the
congregation in Bures is active and growing, the
mission of the church is to all people. In this
troubled world we are constantly considering ways
of making our prayer, worship, study and service
more effective and relevant to help us all
understand better the love of God and his call to
follow Him.
We hope to broaden
the activities of those already in church, with
more people involved in home groups and prayer
groups, in teaching and leading worship, in
visiting and prayer for healing.
Please browse
our website to discover whats happening in
our church.
